| The
Dawn of a New Century, 1996 to present
In
recognition that it would be impossible or even undesirable to
collect everything, a NYSCA funded Collections Management Initiative
was undertaken in 1995 to look at how RCHS manages its ever-growing
collections, to undertake the first computerized inventory of
collections, to assess storage needs with an eye to making collections
more accessible to the public, and to develop a set of collecting
themes that would help to assess current collections and direct
future collecting. As the organization examines how it collects
and interprets Rensselaer County history, it is reaching out to
include members of the community and a variety of perspectives.
The focus today is on exploring the many connections between past
and present and as the 1927 Troy Times article said, "working
on the broadest and most inclusive lines."
RCHS became one of the first New York State history
organizations with a World Wide Web site in September of 1996.
Now in its second major iteration, new components of the site
are added by staff and volunteers all the time.
In October 2001 the Rensselaer County Historical
Society opened a new door to art, history and culture for the
Capital Region when the newly renovated Carr Building was reopened
after a year of construction.
Thanks to individuals, foundations, corporations
and state grants through Senator Joseph L. Bruno, over $2.7 was
raised to create new galleries and visible collections storage
space, install new environmental systems, consolidate staff offices,
and fully renovate the Carriage House.
RCHS is taking a new look at the way local history
is interpreted, and is making those important connections between
the present and the tangible evidence of the past that is the
organization's trust.
