View of Glass Lake, c. 1855
Joseph P. Hidley
Oil on board
Hidley
is best known for his wonderful townscapes, particularly his views
of Poestenkill, NY where he lived. Research has shown that he
was very accurate in his representation of the buildings and other
details. In this view, the large brown, two-story building (detail)
at the bottom right near the lake was the glass factory that gave
the lake its name. Glass for windows and bottles was produced
here in the early 19th century.
