I am researching the Devoe/Defuh, Deyo and Katzebach families of Brunswick and Schaghticoke. My ggg grandfather Anthony Davoe was a Revoltuionary War veteran who was from the Stillwater area but settled in Schaghticoke c. 1784. John M. "Smith" Brock married Abigail C. Norton about 1830. They lived in Grafton, Rensselaer Co NY when the 1840 census was enumerated, but moved to South Bristol, Ontario Co NY before the 1850 census was enumerated. Known children were: John C., Isaac Norton (my ancestor), Sarah R., Jacob, James T., Mary A., and Julia M.

Even though I have completed extensive research in the land and property, will, probate, census, and miscellaneous records for Rensselaer and Ontario Counties, I have not been able to discover the marriage record for John and Abigail, nor have I been able to determine their parentage.

I am looking for any information pertaining to Troy's role in the Civil War. I am particularly interested in finding sources of information concerning the 2nd Regiment, New York State Volunteers aka "the Troy Regiment", raised in Troy in 1861.

This spring I discovered that my birth name was Susannah Gray Pearson. I'm searching for any birth family. I was born on July 29, 1947, in Troy.

My birth mother was 26, single, American born, of Irish descent on both sides and a Roman Catholic. She surrendered me to Catholic Charities (dba Community Maternity Services) shortly after my birth. I was baptized on August 24, 1947, in the Chapel of the [Brady] Maternity Hospital and Infant Home, Albany, NY. (She may have a copy of my baptismal certificate; the social worker told me that my mother visited me while I was in the Infant Home.) She was a Dictaphone operator, and she probably lived somewhere in the Roman Catholic Diocese of Albany, possibly Albany itself. (The Albany Diocese is comprised of 14 counties in upstate New York).

My birth father was 27, single, American born, of Scottish descent and a Roman Catholic. He was a time keeper at a large company; he had a permanent injury to his hand as a result of his military service (tank division).

If any of this sounds familiar, please contact me. Sadly, all adoption agencies, including Catholic Charities, are known to fudge some of the information they give adoptees, adoptive parents and birth parents. The dates are probably correct.

im researching information (very hard from here). i come from the godfrey line of brimmers from that area. i am in particular looking for information regarding what i can only find as the "brimmer family massacre" which happened around june 0f 1754 near hoosick. this is the only info i can find besides the fact that there is supposed to be a monument in petersburgh or somewhere near there. does anyon have any info on this event or pictures of the monument. i understand that it is listed in a book called There is a story abpuit an Indian massacre in the book "History of Rensselaer County New York" pages 361-the town of Hoosick and 464-469 also. the children of John George Brimmer, John and Godfrey, were taken by the Indians on June 15, 1754. Another child, Jeremiah, was killed and scalped. Thanks for providing the information on architectural styles. My husband and I recently bought a 19th century rowhouse, and I've been trying to figure out what architectural style it fell into. Your site was very helpful. I was hoping it would be, since Jersey City shares so much cultural history with the Hudson Valley. John and Patience (HETCHEN) DOWNING are my ancestors 1767-1852 and 1773-1841 respectively. His grandson, John Jacob (1824-52) was born in Mechanicsville, Rensselear County, NY; married Adaline (DeGarmo? Van Ornam?) buried in Pittstown. His son, George Washington DOWNING (1849-1940) was born near Troy, Rensselear County, NY. They don't connect with the other Downings I've found.

Your library and collections are of great potential interest to me. I'm very impressed with the agricultural landscape in northeast Rensselaer county (Berlin, Petersburgh, etc) and plan to photograph there extensively over the coming year. I work with oversize antique banquet cameras and print in the 19th century platinum photographic process and find the terrain in this area a perfect "East Coast Landscape" subject to explore. Researching life of Potter Palmer, b. 1826 in Potters Hollow, Rensselaer Co.; left home at 17 to clerk in Durham Co.; ran his own store in Oneida for 2 1/2 years; clerked for 1 year in Lockport. Went to Chicago, opened mercantile store which he sold to Marshall Field; constructed Palmer House Hotel which he rebuilt following Chicago Fire 1871, and so forth. I was once your neighbor.Lived at 72 Second St. circa 1936 to 1940. My parents had an apt. over a shoe repair shop. Also in the bldg were Masher's Fruit Garden , Bowen's Flowers ',a small grocery and a few other businesses whose names escape me. I was a regular visitor to the Public View Bakery , the White Tower and the Puritan ice cream parlor. There was a beautiful white marble home across the street from you (later a frat house ??) that I always was interested in. Is it still there? My grandfather(John H. I am researching Joseph C. Leyendecker, the turn of the century artist who did the famous Arrow collar ad drawings for Cluett, Peabody. I knew a collection related to JCL had been assembled by Cluett Peabody several years ago, but I could never find where it went. Now I know...I think. Material on Leyendecker is all but impossible to find since his personal papers were burned when he died in 1951. I would love to know what you have and how to obtain copies. I visited Troy a year and a half ago and thoroughly enjoyed the experience. Am doing family research on the McAuliffe-Claven families and have received much help from City Hall, RCHS, and the library. Am anxiously searching for photos of the property formerly located at 127 Ferry St.. It was owned by my ggrandparents and torn down in the 1950's, I believe, to make way for the Ahearne Apts.,projects which are now empty. I have recently acquired an old book titled "Washington's Fairwell Address, To the People of the United States". It states that it was "Published for the Washington Benevolent Society". It was printed in Troy N.Y. in 1810. The first page has quill pen signatures certifying that a "Mr. John Bostwick - Pittstown" was admitted as as a member. The date of admission was July 4, 1811. The secretary of the Society appears to be a Mr. Davis. I would like to find any information on this little book, the Society or the two gentlemen listed. I hope to visit the RCHS the next time I am out east.

While doing research on my fire company, we climb the bell tower and read the bell. The bell was made at the "Meneely Bell Foundery, West Troy, N.Y." in 1875. Trying to locate it's birth place or the historical society that would be tracking such things. The bell has a base of about 40 inches and is estimated to weigh 1700-1800 pounds. The RCHS site is a terrific example of how a local history museum can use the Web for outreach, publicity, etc. The site is well-organized, informative, and attractive. It's not a substitute for a talented staff and provocative programming, but it does encourage those who haven't visited the museum to do so. I hope you're sharing your expertise with other local and regional museums. I especially enjoyed learning that 5'2" Major General Wool has an 80'high monument. How appropriate!

Dear Friends: My dissertation on John A Griswold of Troy, thanks to considerable help from the RCHS, was accepted in 1991. I have not worked very hard to get it published because I found a teaching job soon afterward. I submitted it to the NY State Historical society manuscript competition this year, but did not win. I have since written another manuscript which is being considered for publication now. My question for you is this: do you know of an organization or individual which would like to see this published? I believe it deserves to be published because it deals with some very important events and individuals in the Civil War era and with significant developments in the steel industry in America between 1863 and 1872. So far, University Press of New England and U of Kentucky press have turned me down. If you have suggestions, I would appreciate hearing from you. Griswold was an admirable and important character in the history of New York and the United States whom Rensselaer County can be proud to call its own. Thank you for your consideration.
