Our guest speakers for Thursday, April 4th are Gary Nelson and Joe Fama.

Gary is an RPI graduate (1970) and now retired from a forty year career in transportation systems engineering. In the 1970’s he was active in battling highway projects in the Troy area and then became involved in national highway battles.

Joe is the author of The Hoosick Street Bridge & The North-South Arterial, Twenty Six Years of Street Fighting in Troy, New York. As former director of the Troy Architectural Program, (TAP) for forty years, Joe was at the forefront of working with the people who lived in the neighborhoods that were impacted by the building of the bridge.

They will discuss the project, the misconceptions relating to the North-South Arterial, and  how this massive urban renewal endeavor continues to affect the residents of the City of Troy and Rensselaer County.

This event is FREE for RCHS members, and $10.00 for ‘Not-Yet-Members!’

Book cover The Time For Redemption Jill Knapp 098.jpg

Author and RCHS library volunteer Jill Witbeck Knapp will present a lecture about the 1869 murder of Sheriff Griggs that took place during the Anti Rent Wars. Jill has a personal interest in this historical event as her great, great, grandfather William Witbeck was the person accused of murdering the Sheriff. Jill spent many years researching records here at RCHS as well as other repositories throughout the Capital Region to write this story. It was one of the most tumultuous times in Rensselaer County’s history.

Don't miss this fascinating evening!

FREE for RCHS members, $10 for not-yet-members.
