Researchers using our library often prefer to work individually to find the information they need. Come by during normal hours and explore our vast collection of primary and secondary sources, documents, and photographs. The research library offers quiet space, large antique wooden tables on which to spread out your work, engaging artifacts and helpful assistance from staff and experienced volunteers.
Over-scheduled and need a break? Let us do the work for you.
If you are unable to come to our library or need assistance in finding particular information you may submit a Basic Research Request (<— link to research request letter and form). RCHS staff and trained library volunteers will conduct a general review of our most used reference material for you. Within an estimated 4-6 weeks, we will send you the information we found as well as a list of sources that have been searched. We provide this list so you will not have to recheck these sources. Please note that we cannot guarantee that we will find the information you request as it may not exist in our collections. In the event that we cannot find the information, we will provide you with a list of local researchers.
Please consult with Stacy Pomeroy Draper, Curator, about your research request before writing to us. Some research requests can be quickly resolved or in some cases, we can tell you if RCHS doesn’t have the records you are looking for. Schedule a private appointment?
We are pleased to work with you to schedule research appointments outside of normal public hours with advance notice of at least two weeks. For this service, we charge $60 for up to two hours of library time. This fee includes the option of pulling and copying up to two surrogate court records.
